MEDIA ADVISORY, Nov. 8 /Christian Newswire/ -- Evangelical Christian leader Pat Robertson on Wednesday endorsed former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani stating, "The overriding issue before the American people, is the defense of our population against the bloodlust of Islamic terrorists...our world faces deadly peril...and we need a leader with a bold vision who is not afraid to tackle the challenges ahead." However, those in Jesusland see a greater peril within America, according to David Jeffers, author of Understanding Evangelicals: A Guide to Jesusland. There are nearly as many unborn children killed daily as there was Americans killed on 9/11. "This is the most perilous threat America faces today," Jeffers said.
"Rev. Robertson has said many times in the past that he has sought God's guidance in political matters and many in Jesusland wonder if God told Robertson to support Giuliani" Jeffers asked. Jeffers seriously doubts that Jesusland can get behind a pro-choice, pro-gay/civil union candidate. Jeffers questions: "How does an evangelical vote for a candidate who believes the woman reserves the right, a personal choice, to end the life of her baby?"
Although Giuliani tries to assure evangelicals that he would appoint only strict constructionalist judges in the mold of Scalia, Alito, and Roberts, Jeffers states Giuliani's record speaks otherwise. Jeffers quotes an article by Ben Smith in Politico.com: "A Politico review of the 75 judges Giuliani appointed to three of New York State's lower courts found that Democrats outnumbered Republicans by more than 8 to 1. One of his appointments was an officer of the International Association of Lesbian and Gay Judges." (Source: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0207/2957.html)
Jeffers also questions how Rev. Robertson can applaud Giuliani's leadership yet overlook the Mayor's despicable treatment of his second wife, Donna. Jeffers wonders, "How does an openly and arrogantly adulterous man win the praise of one of America's leading evangelicals?"
Jeffers respectfully reminds Rev. Robertson of Proverbs 14:34, "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people." Jesusland cannot in good conscience support a candidate who not only publicly treats his wife in such a manner, but also a man who no longer has the respect of his own children. And Jeffers counters Giuliani's claim that "it is a personal matter" would only be true if he had not made it so public. "Mayor Giuliani is not the type of man that needs to be representing America," states Jeffers.
Jeffers hopes that after prayerful consideration Rev. Robertson will retract his endorsement.
