ENUMCLAW, Wash., Mar. 12 /Christian Newswire/ -- A Minnesota writer and former parenting advice columnist has found a creative way to connect with her kids. Tracey Finck writes love letters in the form of journals to her three children. In the process she has discovered that her efforts are becoming a valuable family legacy.
In her recently released book “Love Letters to a Child: A Resource for Parents and Grandparents,” Finck passes along secrets of journaling to build better bonds, establish ties and nourish relationships with your children. She says, “Imagine picking up a book, flipping through it, and finding to your surprise that it was written for you— literally. The author had you and only you in mind. It’s as personal as a love letter.”
Love Letters to a Child is eminently practical and tailored for both non-writers and writers. The author encourages non-writers to listen for dialogue, record events, make a list and collect things of value. For more experienced writers, Finck suggests writing notes of affection, describing the moment, sharing things you are learning, highlighting positive qualities and encouraging spiritual growth.
“When we record reflections of our child’s emerging personality, we help them understand themselves and at the same time help ourselves understand them,” says Finck. She adds, “Parents are in the perfect position to notice and record crucial information about a child’s development that will be tremendously helpful as children grow up and seek to understand God’s plan for their life.”
Tracey Finck is a speaker, writer and editor. Her business, Communication Café, is based in Princeton, Minn., where she lives with her husband and three children. She currently teaches for the University of Phoenix and holds a M.A. in English education from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. from St. Olaf College.
