ENUMCLAW, Wash., June 6, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- "Our political leaders cannot do their best for us until people of faith earnestly pray for them," says Dr. Cureton L. Johnson, senior minister of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Fayetteville, NC.
On Monday, June 13, 2011 (the day after Pentecost Sunday) at noon, Johnson and several other clergy and lay people will gather on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, to pray for the president and members of Congress. Johnson will also visit the White House for prayer there.
The event, called "Prayers for Congress & the President," is intended to provide spiritual support and encouragement for U.S. political leaders.
"Prayers offered that day will call upon God to bless our political leaders with wisdom," said Johnson. "We will pray that God will instill in them a spirit of cooperation that is so urgently needed to solve the tough problems facing our nation."
"We will pray earnestly for the healing of broken relationships and for reconciliation among people with such divergent views," he added.
Johnson believes that God calls people to intercede in prayer for political leaders, citing 1 Timothy 2:1-2: "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."
In addition to praying for our country's leaders, Johnson will deliver 500 copies of his book, "Bible-Based Spiritual Stimulus Plan," to congressional offices and to the White House. "The books will be delivered in grocery carts, symbolizing Jesus' words, 'Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.'"
Johnson says his book provides special spiritual guidance for our leaders. "It focuses on twelve life-giving biblical principles to offset America's massive moral and spiritual power failure and to revive Christians and churches."
Johnson is excited about "Prayers for Congress and the President" occurring on Pentecost Monday (Whitmonday), June 13. This is the day after Pentecost Sunday which will be celebrated worldwide on Sunday, June 12, 2011. It was on Pentecost Sunday that the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles of Christ (Acts 2:1-31) and people from different backgrounds came together in unity.
"We'll be praying for a 'miracle of unity' among our leaders on Pentecost Monday," said Dr. Johnson. He asks people of faith to pray for our leaders during worship services on June 12, and on Monday, June 13 at noon.
