TUPELO, Miss., April 13 /Christian Newswire/ -- Former Senator Fred Thompson, who has not announced to run for the office, is leading the pack of candidates for the Republican nomination in a nationwide Presidential Preference Straw Poll. A total of 69,497 had voted in the poll, 64,497 in the Republican race and 4,517 in the Democratic race.
At mid-morning Friday, Thompson had 38% (24,739) of the Republican votes, Newt Gingrich 16% (9,841), Mitt Romney 12% (7,820), John McCain 8% (5,066), Mike Huckabee 5% (3,168) and Sam Brownback 5% (3,033).
On the Democratic side, John Edwards had 40% (1,768), Barack Obama 32% (1,411) and Hillary Clinton 25% (1,098).
