The Need for Safety and Security in Churches

WOODSTOCK, Ga., April 20, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- We want to believe that nothing bad will happen in life, but we know that isn't the case. The truth is that bad things happen every day -- even in the church environment. In fact, churches experience everything from weather-related incidents to medical emergencies. But, it isn't just unintentional situations that churches face today. From theft and vandalism to more serious incidents, churches are not immune. As violence increases in the world, the potential for it to spill into the church environment also increases. Many churches are asking how they can protect their people while ministering to the hurt and broken.

Although not all acts of violence or emergencies are preventable, every church can take steps to prepare for the possibility of danger and strive to protect its people from harm. One way to do this is to implement a ministry-focused safety and security team.

A trained team can respond to a variety of situations, including: medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, theft and vandalism, lost children, domestic violence spill over, or violent or disruptive individuals -- to name a few.

Brotherhood Mutual is partnering with the Center for Personal Protection and Safety to educate churches and related ministries on this topic. Signal Fire Conferences are being presented nationwide, where tactical and legal experts share their knowledge, resources, and experience. Participants are trained how to:

  • Protect their people, property, and ministry

  • Limit their exposure to liability

  • Develop policies and procedures that are tactically and legally sound

The next Signal Fire church security conference is taking place at First Baptist Woodstock in Woodstock, Georgia, on May 12, 2011. For more information visit www.signalfireconference.com.
