SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- "President Obama's second inaugural speech is the greatest I have heard since that of Dr. King at the March on Washington in 1963. President Obama and Dr. King expressed the highest dreams and deepest needs of the people and offered hope," says David James Randolph, Host of the New Way Media Fest. Randolph continues, "President Obama's speech is a call to march from Washington into the streets of need and halls of power across America and around the world with the good news of liberty and justice for all. It is now time for us, the people, all of us, to join this great parade."
The Selma experience to which the President referred is critical now. Selma is that "watershed moment" when Bloody Sunday was followed by Turnaround Tuesday, when courage and creativity combined to continue the march to freedom in the face of violence. Dr. Randolph added, "I was there then and I am here now. This is our watershed moment. This feels like Selma. This feels like Newtown: peril and promise, danger and opportunity. In that moment of confrontation Dr. King and the marchers went to our knees in prayer, then rose to review and confer and march again. President Obama is calling us to face our perils and keep our promises as in Selma. The question for Americans in this moment is -- Shall we overcome? Deep in my heart, I do believe, we, the people, shall overcome!"
Randolph was at the March on Washington in 1963 and in Selma in 1965 when he was on the faculty of Drew University in Madison, NJ. He describes the experience and relates it to our current crises in his book, "More Candles in the Dark: Going From Heartbreak to Healing" (New Way Media, 2010) and available at Amazon.com.
Dr. Randolph deals directly with our current fiscal crisis in his book "Credit Card Christ" which also is set against the background of engagement with social issues from the 1960's onward (New Way Media, 2012) and available from Amazon.com.
Dr. David James Randolph is Host of the New Way Media Fest whose theme this year is "The Great Parade: From the March on Washington and Beyond 9/11." The question, "What have we learned since the Sixties which can help us face challenges today?" will be addressed by a variety of voices including poets, pastors and artists in many media. Dates of the Fest are September 6-8, and 11, 2013. The Fest is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
David Madgalene is Director of the Fest. Madgalene, a regional coordinator for 100,000 Poets For Change, is currently working on an audio-cd version of his book, "Call Down the Angel" (New Way Media, 2012).
