Student leverages unique experience abroad to pursue career fighting white collar crime

NEW YORK, April 6, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Trish Carreiro was a student at Duke University when she enrolled in the International Leadership Semester (ILS) at the Swiss School of Management, European University of Rome (Università Europea di Roma) in the Spring of 2009. While there are many study abroad options available, the ILS program stands out because it offers students an excellent global leadership experience combined with a solid foundation in character building.
For Trish Carreiro the ILS program contributed to a greater vision of leadership and solidified her belief that youth is no barrier to success. Now a student at the New York University School of Law, and considering a career in white collar criminal prosecutions, Trish says, "Sometimes you may think that leadership is meant only for the elder, the established and the more experienced. But leadership is not something your youth needs to keep you from. It's time to step up."
Trish helped found a human rights initiative called, "Salsa to Save" as part of the International Justice Mission organization (IJM). This dance-a-thon event raised thousands of dollars to help prosecute previously unprosecuted rapes in Latin America by purchasing rape kits. Trish explains, "During my human rights work at Duke, things fell into place and our Salsa to Save initiative was a great success. The International Leadership Semester taught me practical techniques and gave me the tools that I can now apply meticulously and with a greater sense of awareness and purpose."
An increasing number of colleges and universities have begun developing not only individual courses, but entire degree programs specifically devoted to the study of leadership. While many schools are trying to catch up to the demand for leadership programs, the ILS program already has a two-fold program in place. Students learn global leadership principles that are essential in today's world and work outside of the classroom with a community service project that puts theory into practice.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Center for Education Studies, employment for occupations relevant to leadership studies is expected to continue growing into 2020.
In the past, leadership programs were typically reserved for executives and didn't always take personal growth into account. The ILS improves leadership development by using student assessments, leadership mentors, corporate visits, community service leadership projects as well as creating and monitoring a personal development plan that students can take back to their universities.
During her time as Director of Spiritual Enrichment at Duke University Trish was eager to pass on her leadership, but feels she may have done so in a 'me-focused' way. ILS taught her that nurturing others was a responsibility of being a leader, but with the unique angle of "becoming better people because we're becoming better together." Trish described it as "instead of being at the top of the pyramid looking down, we are all pushing the pyramid up together." ILS stresses the concept of humility; the sense of nurturing each other in a community of peers. "You can't do everything others can do and that's okay. People have their skill sets and none of us are complete. We all need each other. ILS helped remind me to be humble enough to accept that."
The International Leadership Semester program has three study abroad options for students to choose from: an 89-day semester program in the Fall or Spring, a six-week dual city Rome-Oxford Summer program, and a Pre-University semester or year-long program.
