WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Middle East is a center of conflict where faith and religious beliefs can cause serious debates, sometimes resulting in bloodshed. Throughout what is considered the Holy Land by three major religions--Christianity, Judaism and Islam--lies much of the unrest and religious strife that is part of everyday life there. Within this region, there is a hospital that helps builds peace by serving all who come to its doors.

Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem, considered the pre-eminent provider of medical services in the Holy Land, serves as a beacon of hope for Palestinian women in desperate need of healthcare. Holy Family Hospital is an obstetrical/gynecological facility--the only one in the region that can handle the complicated medical conditions of women living in extreme poverty and under the shadow of political strife. True to its original mission, the hospital doors are open to the poor and destitute mothers and babies of the Bethlehem region. It is through the generosity of donors that these patients, who have no financial means, can receive medical care.

Holy Family Hospital was designated by Pope John Paul II as one of his top 100 projects for the new millennium. Dedicated to delivering life and caring for the poor, the hospital brings compassion and benevolence into this area and serves as a safe haven for 22,000 women and children per year. Moreover, the hospital’s neo-natal intensive care unit is the only one in the region and the obstetrics department provides the only long-term hospitalization for mothers with high-risk pregnancies.
