THOMSON, Ill., Aug. 19, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- The actor and producer who took moviegoers on a journey to discover American history in 2012's Monumental now is helping families learn Christian history.

Three years removed from Monumental, Kirk Cameron stars in a new family friendly audio drama, With Lee In Virginia, a story which spotlights devotion to God in the Civil War. Cameron plays Stonewall Jackson, while Sean Astin (Mom's Night Out, The Lord Of The Rings) plays Jeb Stuart. Also starring in it are Brian Blessed (Star Wars) and Chris Anthony (Adventures In Odyssey).

With Lee In Virginia is the latest project from Heirloom Audio Productions, which earlier released In Freedom's Cause and Under Drake's Flag. All of the two-CD sets feature more than two hours of educational entertainment and are based on real heroes, with the goal of putting God back into history and telling the stories of people we often don't think of as Christians. The fourth project, The Dragon and the Raven, will be released later this year. They're all part of the Extraordinary Adventures Of G.A. Henty series.

"[These CDs are] giving us the ability to feed our children with timeless truths that bring Gospel transformation to their thinking, by seeing those thoughts lived out in previous generations by godly people," said Cameron, who was simply a consumer when he bought 2013's Under Drake's Flag for his children -- and only later became friends with Heirloom Audio executive producer Bill Heid.

Cameron said the quality of the CDs – such as the original music and the realistic sound effects – is what grabbed him.

"This was not just Adventures in Odyssey," Cameron said. "This was taken to the next level."

He has used the CDs to initiate spiritual conversations with his children at the dinner table.

"As a dad, I'm always looking for things to impart wisdom and virtue and character to my kids. And tools like this are really helpful," Cameron said.

Under Drake's Flag was nominated for two Audies, which are the audio equivalent of the Academy Awards. Among the nominations was for Audio Drama Of The Year. It told the story of Sir Francis Drake, while In Freedom's Cause recounted the adventures of William Wallace.

Heid said audio drama engages the listener's imagination by taking them back in time and immersing them in the story. The dramas include curriculum, which makes them particularly popular among homeschool families.

"We are prisoners in the here and now," Heid said. "With history, we find freedom by finding answers that exist beyond the pressures of daily life."

Heid founded Heirloom Audio Productions in 2013 out of frustration by the curriculum taught in schools and the large amount of screen time that children are exposed to on a daily basis.
