CHARLESTON, W.V., Jan. 21, 2022 /
Christian Newswire/ -- Today, the West Virginia Senate passed Senate Resolution 12 (SR 12) designating January 22 as the Day of Tears in West Virginia. This was a bi-partisan effort.
Sponsored by Senator Patricia Rucker (R-Jefferson), Stephen Baldwin (D-Greenbrier), and Randy Smith (R-Tucker), SR 12 encourages citizens of West Virginia to lower their flags in remembrance of those who have been lost to abortion. West Virginia joins Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana in adopting the Day of Tears.
"The number one cause of death in 2021 was Abortion- the killing of an unborn child. If that isn't a cause for tears, I don't know what is," said Senator Rucker.
West Virginia has been working diligently to put protections in place for the unborn. Current laws include a ban on abortions at or after the 5th month of pregnancy on the basis of pain, a ban on dismemberment abortions, informed consent, and parental consent for minors seeking abortions. West Virginia also passed a constitutional amendment stating that, "Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding for abortion."
"West Virginia has proven that the life of the unborn is not, and should not, be a partisan issue," said Anne Fitzgerald, Day of Tears Executive Director. "Thank you to the legislators for recognizing the importance of setting a day aside for West Virginians to mourn and honor all of those who have been affected by abortion. We know that the effects of abortion last a lifetime, not only for the child who never had a chance to live outside the womb, but for the parents and families who grieve their loss."
Day of Tears legislation is currently before, or being introduced in, Idaho, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Ohio.
