ENUMCLAW, Wash., Nov. 13 /Christian Newswire/ -- 23.6 million people in the United States--over 7.8% of the population-- have diabetes, and 57 million have pre-diabetes, according to a 2007 report by the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse*.
The Department of Health and Human Services defines pre-diabetes as "a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with pre-diabetes have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.**"
Evelyn Geisler is a pharmacist, certified diabetes educator, and certified insulin pump trainer. She has also written health columns for her local newspaper and has published two novels featuring a diabetic private investigator.
Ms. Geisler's new book, "Sweet Talks with God" (Pleasant Word, 2008), is a practical devotional written in a conversational tone for those who have either been diagnosed with diabetes or for those who know somebody with the disease.
"My book puts diabetes and scripture together for the first time. Its aim is to help people with diabetes live successfully with their disease. People with diabetes, as with any chronic disease, are faced with daily challenges. They need the strength only scripture can provide."
Practical helps are also included for setting monthly goals, recording blood sugars, and developing exercise and diet plans.
"The key to success as a diabetic is education," says Geisler, "When people are educated about diabetes, they are able to make it fit into their lives."
Ms. Geisler's husband, Bob, is a rocket scientist and has diabetes; Ms. Geisler has pre-diabetes. The Geislers have been married for 44 years, are the proud parents of three adult children, and make their home in California.
