ENUMCLAW, Wash., May 5 /Christian Newswire/ -- According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 50 million people provide care for chronically ill, disabled, or aged family members or friends every year. "These people are exhausted, overwhelmed, frustrated, and unappreciated heroes," says Annetta Dellinger, a former caregiver who serves on the staff of National SomeOne Cares Christian Caregivers Conferences.

Teaming with her friend Karen Boerger, a retired educator, founder of Caring Hearts Ministry, and also a former caregiver, Dellinger coauthored a new book to give hope and strength to caregivers. They designed "JOY-spirations for Caregivers" with the time-stressed caregiver in mind. The book's 36 topics can be read chronologically or at random.

"These short reads are perfect for the busy caregiver," says Shirley Braddock, a retired oncology nurse. The book includes stories about caregiving, JOYtoons (cartoons), and practical tips from caregivers.

The Rev. Bob Willis, a Hospice bereavement counselor in Oklahoma, says, "Annetta and Karen reveal the questions and frustrations of caregivers, but they also provide helpful guides along this very challenging and rewarding journey. They are right on target!"

As an only child, Annetta Dellinger took care of her parents in their later years while holding down a full-time teaching job and fulfilling responsibilities as a wife and mother. During Karen Boerger's 24 years as an educator, she experienced caregiving duties involving her mother-in-law, husband, mother, aunt, stepmother, and father.

Before Marlys Taege retired, she served as an executive with a ministry helping the developmentally disabled. "For those struggling with the 'Why's?' of caregiving," she says, "this book brings comfort, insight, and encouragement from God and from the authors' own understanding and solid advice based on their personal experiences."

"The writers know what it means to feel the loneliness and guilt that often accompanies caregiving," agrees the Rev. Gerald Matzke, who worked with LCMS World Relief and Human Care. "This book will give them the assurance of God's unending love and presence in their lives."
