MEDIA ADVISORY, June 2 /Christian Newswire/ -- Stories abound about college students graduating into a moribund job market, but a group of 32 college students and recent graduates went another direction to find jobs.
They became missionaries. At least for a little while.
World Gospel Mission, a missionary-sending agency based in Marion, Ind., designed the VIA program (Volunteers In Action) specifically for 20-somethings and college students. The VIA program gives individuals the rare chance to do what they love to do while serving on the mission field for six weeks to a year.
"The job market for missionaries has never been brighter," says Hubert Harriman, president of WGM. "The great thing about WGM is that our staff helps missionaries learn how to raise support from their existing network of friends, family members, and such. For college students who are just starting to exercise their call, the VIA program is a perfect fit."
Before heading out to the four corners of the globe, the VIA participants gathered at WGM's headquarters for a crash course in cultural adaptation, spiritual preparation, and ministry training. While in various countries, VIA participants will work directly with missionaries and nationals, giving them a realistic taste of a cross-cultural missions life.
College students may also be able to use their overseas experience with the VIA program for college credit, completing an internship or practicum. Many colleges require or strongly encourage a cross-cultural experience, and the VIA program presents an interesting way to fulfill that requirement.
