SEATTLE, Feb. 11, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Leone Nunley stands five foot one and weighs 107 pounds. But during the last 21 years, as she has lifted, tugged, and moved her grown son, she has never torqued her back.
"God gave me a strong spine because he knew I'd need it," she writes in her book, "Fighting for David."
In 1989, Nunley's son David McRae, then a junior at Washington State University, was heading to work on his motorcycle when he was involved in a horrific accident. He was thrown 39 feet in midair and his body skidded an additional 20 feet on the highway. His helmet was cracked and his face guard shredded.
After removing 5.5cm of the language side of David's brain, doctors declared him to be in a persistent vegetative state. His first EEG reports were so grim that David was not expected to regain consciousness.
"We were devastated, but determined to see for ourselves whether he would remain in that state. We knew the brain takes time to refocus and reorganize after a severe trauma."
At first, Nunley and her family battled medical professionals and insurance carriers just to keep David alive; later they fought to provide him therapies that would stimulate his damaged brain.
His family cared for him at home for 12 years. "When we brought David home he was in diapers, was almost completely paralyzed, was mute, and he still had his stomach tube in," recalls Nunley.
Now, 21 years since the accident, David is walking and talking. He lives in a duplex near Nunley's home with a supervisory caregiver.
"Sometimes, it's better to follow one's heart than a doctor's diagnosis," says Nunley. "We knew from the beginning that we would never have the old David back, but the Lord has given us a new David and that is the person we love, support, and encourage."
Nunley remains passionate about helping others who have suffered from brain injuries -- especially our militray men and women -- and reaching those who care for them. All the proceeds from the sale of "Fighting for David" will go to help our American Heroes -- our veterans.
