Haiti Relief: New Plans, New Hope

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Feb. 10 /Christian Newswire/ -- Bright Hope, a Christian non-profit mission organization bringing Hope to those living on less than a $1 a day has been serving the Haiti area for over 15 years. With over 40 churches in their partner network, they are strategically positioned to carry out their Haiti Disaster Relief plan through the indigenous churches. USAID and OCHA reports estimate the number of Internally Displaced People (IDP's) is over 1,100,000, with over 2 million people in need of food.

Bright Hope heard the call and launched their relief plan. They began implementing aid immediately after the earthquake. Bright Hope is currently facilitating programs in two areas, Port-au-Prince and Pignon. "Two tent cities housing over 4400 people in Port-au-Prince received their first and only relief aid services from our organization." states Bright Hope President Craig Dyer. "One is on top of a garbage dump in the Delmas 33 area and the other in a field outside the airport. It is such a blessing for these people to know that we will be here tomorrow and everyday, bringing help and hope to get them get back on their feet." He continues.

The Pignon area, chosen as Bright Hope's hub, has doubled in size from the IDP's to over 65,000 people. "On a recent conference call to Haiti, one of our Pastor Partners Jephthe, stated how grateful his ministry and tent cities are for the outpouring of help and support from our donors and churches. Jephthe told us, 'We are praying for YOU because of all you have done'", relates Dyer.

Programs being provided in these areas are:

• Food Relief for 2 Camps for Internally Displaced People -- in Port- au-Prince

• Supplemental Feeding Program in Pignon

• Counseling Center for Internally Displaced People

• Medical Supplies in Port-Au-Prince and Pignon

• Support of Pastors and Ministry Leaders

• Micro-Loan Program

• Orphan and Vulnerable Children Care and Education

Seven containers total of food, medicines and supplies have been planned over the first 12 weeks to provide for the immediate needs. Bright Hope shipped 2 containers via ocean liner on Monday filled with food (368,504 meals), individual Med Packs, 1050 Bibles, 1411 pairs of shoes, 2 generators, 1 large Solar powered oven capable of producing 1400 meals per day, 60 family sized solar powered Sun Ovens, tools and equipment, and water purification systems.

A shipment is schedule to be flown into the Port-au-Prince area this week containing 1 million dollars worth of medical supplies including antibiotics, bandages, sterile gloves, pain and swelling relievers, gauze, bandages, germicides, surgical instruments, water purification tablets and more. They will be distributed to Port-au-Prince and Pignon medical facilities to help over 30,000 people.
