Bringing More 'Realism' to Christian films

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Oct. 9, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- An independent movie currently being shot on location in New Zealand aims to match Hollywood at it's own game. The film is called 'The Watchers,' a reference to angelic beings found in the book of Daniel. The film's director, A.K. Strom says he wants to make an End-time movie that has a very "realistic" feel. A teaser trailer released this past week shows CGI shots of solar flares striking the earth and giant meteors raining down. "Our goal is to bring the reality of the Last Days home to people in a very high-impact way," says the director.

"One thing that helps is that we are shooting The Watchers in New Zealand," he adds, referring to the location made famous by the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Hobbit' movies. "This place is a scenic wonderland for filmmakers."

"Another thing is that technology has now reached the point where realistic CGI is available even to Independent movies. So the realism can be greatly enhanced. But at the end of the day, it is still about the story and the characters."

A number of Christian movies in the past have been criticized for lacking realism. Strom says that some of this criticism is justified. "But we cannot afford to abandon this battle," he says. "There is a whole generation at stake. Today's culture is very 'visual', very media-oriented. And we simply cannot afford to be losing this war for the hearts and minds of the young."

But how can a Christian director compete with the mega-budgets of Hollywood?

Strom says it is indeed very difficult. "But it is possible," he says. "Technology is leveling the playing field. The CGI that we are able to put in our movies today is amazing - and getting cheaper all the time. Camera technology is advancing by leaps and bounds."

"If ever there was a time for believers to be making these kinds of movies," Strom says, "It is now."

'The Watchers,' an End-time thriller, is scheduled for release in mid-2014.
