CLEVELAND, Oct. 30, 2023 /Christian Newswire/ -- Widely recognized as one of the earliest pioneers of Christian Rock music in America, Cleveland-based author Joe Markko has released his latest award-winning book, “Genesis of a Genre: The Birth of Christian Rock.”
Filling in the blanks left by the 2023 Lionsgate film, “The Jesus Revolution,” Markko’s authorized biography of the Southern California rock band, Agăpē, is set against the youth-driven backdrop of the Jesus Movement, the “fourth Great Awakening in American Evangelical history.”
Interviewing dozens of musicians, managers and those influenced by the music, the adventure begins in 1968, five years before Contemporary Christian Music became “a thing.” Larry Norman, one of the progenitors of the emerging genre, had just left the group, “People!” and his first, Christian album, “Upon This Rock,” was still a year away. Amy Grant, the “Queen of Christian Pop,” was 8-years old.
A story of beginnings, “Genesis of a Genre: The Birth of Christian Rock” is an intimate look at the journey of a group of teen-age, hippie rockers who wanted to change the world for Jesus. It’s a tale about “'the days of old' when minstrels became messengers and the Word became flesh once again."
The official release date for the 232-page book is October 31, 2023. Published by Home Before Midnight, LLC in Cleveland, Ohio, paperbacks and eBooks are now available online and by order/request from bookstores and libraries.
