WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 /Christian Newswire/ -- National Clergy Council president Rev. Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK), representing church leaders from Catholic, Evangelical, Orthodox and Protestant traditions, is asking churches across the country to urge their members to intensify prayer for six trapped miners in Utah and for their loved ones.

Mr. Schenck, who frequently visits Utah for preaching engagements, praised the work of rescue teams and state and federal officials who have intervened in the crisis. Mr. Schenck had special commendation for Utah senator Orrin Hatch whom he knows personally and talks with regularly.

Mr. Schenck stated, "Senator Hatch cares deeply for people and especially those of his own state. I know him to be a man who believes strongly in prayer. He has shown extraordinary concern for these men and their families. He is on site and praying for them and will stop at nothing to help. We need more public officials like Senator Hatch at times like these."
