Ministry Leader Urges Americans to Redefine 'Home' in Light of Rising Foreclosures and Mental Depression

GREENVILLE, SC, Sept. 29 /Christian Newswire/ -- For foreclosed homeowners, the home is the least of what they lose. That is the conclusion of Laura Baker, founder of Prasso, a self-help scripture-based counseling ministry. Baker's comments come as a study shows a link between foreclosures and major mental depression.

According to the study by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, nearly half of the people interviewed who were going through a foreclosure experienced symptoms of depression while 37 percent met screening criteria for major depression.

Baker says foreclosed homeowners experience an even deeper problem than depression, however. "A home represents safety, security and stability. These are things we need to find in God, not our home. We need to redefine 'home' to mean having our security in Christ and knowing who we are in Him, rather than the place we sleep at night."

Prasso's goal, says Baker, is "to help people to see who God really is during a crisis of faith, like a foreclosure." Baker believes that there is a spiritual dynamic to the current spike in foreclosure-related depression. "Whenever our identity begins to stray away from Christ, which is very natural thing to have happen in a crisis, it will always lead us to great personal struggle. Many people in this country have their identity in the American Dream, and owning a home is a key part of that. Having that dream snatched away causes great mental anguish, but it forces the individual to ask, 'Where is my true and lasting home? Who is God who prepares a place for me?' The answer to that distress is a clear understanding of who God is."

Prasso Ministries is a non-profit, faith-based discipleship ministry committed to partnering with individuals in their Christian faith journey, helping them to establish wellbeing from a Biblical perspective.

According to Baker, Prasso offers easy-to-access help to anyone throughout the United States interested in finding the hope and victory that comes from knowing God and daily practicing His Word in their lives.
