ENUMCLAW, Wash., March 16, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- Christian songwriter Lynn DeShazo has written over 350 songs in a career spanning over 30 years and has written exclusively for Integrity Music since 1989. Her songs have been recorded by a range of musicians over the years, many of whom are being honored at the upcoming 42nd annual Gospel Music Association Dove Award Ceremony.
Current and previous Dove nominees who have performed DeShazo's songs include Travis Cottrell, Michael W. Smith, Israel Houghton, Scott Wesley Brown, Don Moen, Fred Hammond, and Kim Hill.
At the 2003 Dove Awards, Michael W. Smith's album, "Worship Again," won Praise and Worship Album of the Year. One of the songs featured on the album was "Ancient Words," written by Lynn DeShazo. And in 1999, Kim Hill's album "Renewing the Heart, Live," won Praise and Worship Album of the Year which included DeShazo's song "Be Magnified."
DeShazo's book, "More Precious Than Silver: The God-Stories Behind the Songs of Lynn DeShazo" (WinePress, 2010) tracks the journey behind several well-known praise and worship songs such as: "More Precious Than Silver," "Be Unto Your Name," and "Ancient Words."
Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, DeShazo graduated from Auburn University and has lived in Birmingham nearly all her life. DeShazo plays the guitar and considers her music education more "hands on" than traditional.
"I always had an interest in music and songs; I started playing guitar and played favorite songs by ear. I eventually learned worship songs and then began writing my own. [Being a church worship leader] became a natural overflow of my spiritual growth and involvement in local churches."
