Danish Design Company Battles Poor Digital Typography Through Crowdfunding

AARHUS, Denmark, March 16, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- An ambitious project by Danish design company, 2K/Denmark, to heighten the quality of the digital reading experience through better typography has seen the light on the crowdfunding website, Kickstarter.

From a background in Bible design and typography, 2K/Denmark is working to improve how we read on the digital mobile platforms.

Publishers of digital Bible content have focused on technology and content as their primary development considerations.

In contrast, print publishers have long understood the impact of interior design, paper quality etc. on the reading experience. The selection of typeface, layout, typesetting and other factors determine the amount of time a reader will stay engaged with the content and retain what they have read.

Unfortunately most digital Bible publishers have ignored the impact of design on the reading experience. Why? The answer is quite simple: the technology has not been available to present the world's greatest literary treasure, the Bible, at the same level of interior design found in fine printed Bibles worldwide.

"Almost all digital texts are presented using web technology. And web technology doesn't cut it, when compared to printed books," commented Thomas Silkjær, partner in 2K/Denmark. "Typography plays a major part in how we perceive the texts we read. And we are convinced that only high quality screen typography can compete with the printed book."

Digital publishing offers mobility, reach and volume, but not an aesthetically pleasing reading experiences. 2K/Denmark hopes to change that through the development of a cross-platform text layout engine.

Development of the text layout engine is already in the proof of concept stage, running on iOS and Android, and 2K/Denmark are now moving to seek funding from the masses on Kickstarter.

"We are already publishing a Bible reading app on iOS – continuing this development as our first project with the new text layout engine was a natural decision. But we have plans to enter new markets in cooperation with interested publishers," commented Thomas Silkjær.

The purpose of the next generation of the app, BibleOn, is to let people engage with the text of the Bible, for free, on their smartphone or tablet device, in the same high quality as any printed edition, but with the digital advantages of advanced full text search, commenting, highlighting, combining materials, adding illustrations and customizing the appearance to suit the needs of the reader.
