CHICAGO, Aug. 11, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Chicago Bible Society, which is as old as the city itself, is for the first time ever, airing a thirty minute TV Special about its unique ministry to the Windy City and now, through New Media, the World.
The broadcast, "Taking the Word to Chicago and the world" will be broadcast on the "Total Living Network" Cable Channel in Chicago on Monday, September 9th at 8pm CST. You can preview the Video by going to CBS Website: www.chicagobiblesociety.net and click on the Global Bible TV Icon.
The founder and President of TLN, Jerry K Rose, was honored with the Prestigious Chicago Bible Society Gutenberg Award in 1996.
This moving and inspirational telecast tells the story of its ministry to the city from 1840 to the present. Highlights include its powerful work of distributing the Bible to the thousands of early Chicago Citizenry, many of whom were poor and sick. The Bible Society was a strong supporter of Evangelist DL Moody as he began his work in the Windy City in the 1800's. CBS also distributed thousands of Bibles during the Civil War to both the Union Troops and Confederate Soldiers interned at Camp Douglas in Illinois. The video also shows powerful testimonies from Chicagoans who treasured the Word of God, especially after the Chicago Fire when over 300,000 Bibles were distributed.
In 1933, the Society had an exhibit, "The Handwritten Bible" at the Chicago World's fair. Thousands of visitors added a favorite Scripture to this unique book. The Chicago Bible Society was also a major force during the 1962 Billy Graham Chicago Crusade. Dr. Graham was awarded the Gutenberg Award during his campaign.
Today, CBS continues to minister in several ways: Distributing the Bible, through Chaplains, to those incarcerated at Cook County Jail and other correctional institutions in the area. The Bible Society also sponsors Bible Study and discipleship programs at the jail.
"Project Phillip" has hundreds of graduates at the Jail. CBS also distributes Sciptures to churches and those in hospitals and nursing homes.
CBS also partners with "The By The Hand Club for Kids." This is an urban literacy project impacting the lives of thousands of inner city children.
CBS has an expansive "New Media" outreach offering free online Bible Apps and online Bible Study, in addition to its Facebook page and Blog reaching visitors around the world.
