Catholic Families for America Calls on Newt Gingrich to Rescind Scozzafava Endorsement in NY-23 Special Election
CFA Executive Director: "While I admire Newt's intelligence and respect him as a fellow Catholic, his crass, political calculation in endorsing such a pro-abortion candidate sends an unfortunate signal that party loyalty is more important than morality. Newt needs to examine his conscience for so publicly flouting the Church's doctrine on abortion and gay marriage." Contact: Dr. Kevin Roberts,

Christian Newswire/ -- Today the Catholic Families for America PAC, which endorsed Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in next week's special election for New York's 23rd Congressional District, called upon former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich to rescind his controversial endorsement of liberal Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava. Gingrich's endorsement has befuddled Republicans, conservatives, and even liberals.
"Mr. Gingrich has been such an important leader in the conservative movement, it is disappointing to see him bow to the blind party loyalty that has poisoned American politics," said Dr. Kevin Roberts, executive director of the group. "Put plainly, there is absolutely no justification--particularly on moral grounds--for a conservative Republican and recent convert to Catholicism to endorse a candidate whose positions are so diabolically opposed to Church doctrine."
Catholic Families for America is a national organization that seeks to promote and defend authentic Church teaching in the public square. The group aims to have a major impact in the 2010 midterm elections, and sees the curious Gingrich endorsement of a pro-abortion liberal as a major obstacle to their aims. Though CFA typically focuses on the hypocrisy of Catholic Democrats, the Gingrich episode is a controversy that demands attention.
"At this point, with the final weekend of the campaign upcoming, Mr. Gingrich has an opportunity to make amends, and do what is right--what his Catholic conscience ought to call him to do," Roberts contended. "Endorse Doug Hoffman, who would be a reliable pro-life, pro-family--and conservative--voice in Congress."
In closing, Roberts warned, "In purely political terms, I guarantee Mr. Gingrich that his endorsement of Scozzafava will permanently wreck his presidential aspirations among conservatives, whom, he may remember, are the bedrock foundation of the Republican party."
