NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 14, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- Bishop E.W. Jackson founded the Chesapeake Martin Luther King Leadership Breakfast fifteen years ago to bring the community together around the vision of Dr. King. The Breakfast honors leaders of all races and backgrounds.

After 9/11, they made a commitment to include representatives of law enforcement. This year, in light of attacks and protests against police over incidents in Ferguson and Staten Island, the Breakfast will do something special to encourage police officers.

"We have honored law enforcement since 9/11," says the Bishop. "We realized that police get attacked when anything seems to go wrong, but seldom appreciated for the daily dangerous job they do to keep us safe. When a law enforcement officer reports for duty, it could be his last shift. After Ferguson and Staten Island, some protesters actually called for the murder of police. Then two police officers were assassinated. Because of these unfortunate developments, we are taking special steps this year to encourage men and women in blue."

The Breakfast is also recognizing two outstanding youth. They will help honor police and the police will help honor them. Presentations and awards will be exchanged between them. Bishop Jackson has urged MLK celebrations around the country to honor police officers and youth and bring the two together.

"In Portsmouth, Virginia six people were shot just the other night. Who is going to address that?" asks Bishop Jackson. "The police are charged with bringing criminals to justice so the rest of us can live in peace and safety. When we honor those who serve us, we must always remember law enforcement officers."

The Breakfast is being held at the Marriott, 725 Woodlake Drive in Chesapeake, Virginia at 10 AM, Monday, January 19th. Tickets are $25, and available by calling 757-410-7740.
