NASHVILLE, Jan. 30 /Christian Newswire/ -- While millions of Americans prepare to watch the Bears face the Colts, Christians across the U.S. will use Super Sunday to show Facing the Giants, the 2006 football movie that makes the game about much more than winning and losing.
Facing the Giants releases Jan. 30 on DVD after hitting theaters at the start of 2006 football season. Produced by a Georgia church, with its all-volunteer cast and a $100,000 production budget, Giants earned more than $10 million in box office sales. It ranks in the top ten all-time highest-grossing Evangelical movies.
Starting today, churches, high schools, youth groups, teams, and Christian bookstores are staging Giants tailgate parties, movie nights, and home showings. A small sample:
Spartanburg SC--In this city where the film played in theaters for more than three months, Christian Supply will roll out the red carpet, throw on the searchlights, and welcome four Giants cast members to its large stage.
North Monroe LA--North Monroe Baptist Church's annual "Day of Champions" typically hosts nationally known speakers on Super Sunday. This year, Alex Kendrick, writer/director/lead actor in Giants will speak to all three Sunday morning services. Last night, the church showed the film to more than a thousand people.
Ft. Meyers FL--When the tough-guy head of Hosanna Book Store's videos saw Giants, then admitted he shed a tear, that cinched it. The staff arranged a Friday night film showing with tee-shirts, giveaways, and a plan to compete with the Big Box stores. Owner Dan Vera said, "There's a buzz out there we didn't create."
Valdosta GA--"Once Giants came to town," says Jimmy Tucker, head of the music department at the Potter's House Parable Christian Store, "people were asking about the DVD. We've pre-sold three times as much as we've ever pre-sold anything before."
Batavia NY--Pastor Marty of City Church is advertising in the paper and featuring the film at both morning services of their "Day of Champions." The Friday night before Super Sunday, the church is showing Facing the Giants.
"This Super Sunday stars two head coaches, both Christians, who've faced their own giants, personal and otherwise," said Kris Fuhr of Provident Films, which distributed Giants for Sony Pictures. "The parallels are rich."
The new Facing the Giants DVD includes an extended interview with Georgia University Football Coach Mark Richt (who has a substantial cameo in the film and serves on the advisory board), a making-of segment, and side-splitting outtakes.
The rest of the movie's advisory board will be keeping an eye on both Super Sunday dramas, football names such as: Dan Reeves, Mrs. Tom Landry, Vince Lombardi, Jr., Kyle Rote, Jr., Grant Teaff, Yale Lary, and Mike McCoy.
Made by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany GA, Giants rode a wave of media attention last year when the MPAA gave its first PG rating to a film for what it originally termed "proselytizing."
