Dr. Alveda King to Congressional Black Caucus: Realignment is Critical

Contact: Leslie Palma, 347-286-7277

WASHINGTON, March 2, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- The following is released by Dr. Alveda King:

Israel faces annihilation from Iran, a sponsor of terrorism that is developing nuclear weapons. It faces terror attacks from radical Islamists on every side. The leader of Israel comes to our Capitol at one of the most critical junctures in his nation's history and what do members of the Congressional Black Caucus do?

They plan to boycott Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel.

Why? Pride and quibbles over protocol, citing disrespect to President Obama from the Prime Minister because he didn't clear his trip with the White House before accepting Speaker Boehner's invitation.

But since when do you turn your back on an old friend over an alleged sleight? What kind of person turns his nose in the air when a trusted ally who faces death wants to talk with you?

Let's not forget that Prime Minister Netanyahu has not always been treated graciously at the White House. And let's not forget that one of the President's chief campaign strategists is right now actively working in Israel to defeat Mr. Netanyahu in Israel's upcoming election. If one wants to find reasons to be offended, the Prime Minister doesn't have to look too far.

This is not the first time the CBC has placed politics above people's lives. Black Caucus members have placed slavish party loyalty above the lives of our most oppressed and helpless brothers and sisters -- the unborn. They have turned their backs on children in the womb, the victims of horrifying violence, and now they turn their backs on the leader of Israel, the home God gave to His chosen people.

God promised Abraham, the father of the Hebrew and Arab nations that He would bless his seed. He made no exception that said, "But it's OK if you walk out on the leader of My chosen people for your pride's sake." God said to Isaac's children, "I will bless you abundantly.” God also promised to abundantly bless Ishmael's children. So God is impartial with His love to all of His Children. The Congressional Black Caucus would do well to remember the words of Martin Luther King: "We must learn to live together as brothers [and sisters] or perish together as fools." Perhaps there is a way to negotiate peaceful nonviolent conflict in the world if we can get past the enemy of pride.

God instructs us, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." We puff ourselves up at our own peril. But while the only peril the Congressional Black Caucus sees is damage to the President's prestige, the peril Prime Minister Netanyahu faces is the nuclear destruction of his entire nation. The Congressional Black Caucus needs a reality check.

And the reality check is this -- ultimately, there is no escape for the sin of pride or for the sin of abortion or for any other sin, except through the redeeming work of Jesus on the cross. It's time that the Congressional Black Caucus look to God and His Word instead of President Obama, Planned Parenthood, or some political playbook.

When we look to God, we see our pride melt away, we see to whom glory is due, and we see our friends as more important than ourselves. We see leadership as servanthood, serving God and serving others -- not ourselves. Our priorities are realigned.

The Congressional Black Caucus needs realignment. It should turn its back on selfish pride and extend a welcoming hand to Prime Minister Netanyahu.
