ENUMCLAW, Wash., April 6, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- Megachurches and seeker-sensitive worship make news: articles in Forbes and TIME, pastors like Rick Warren and Joel Osteen appearing on Larry King Live. But a new book suggests that God is not pleased with the actions of today's church.
In "Stench! How Abominations Pollute and Desolate the Postmodern Church" (WinePress Publishing, 2011), author Mary S. Camp says the church has turned away from the Bible and toward culture for its message and methods. The results are worship that keeps God at a distance, frenetic activity, and a high value on tolerance -- all of which are abominations to God, Camp maintains.
The message of Camp's book directly conflicts with the megachurch and come-as-you-are mentality prevalent in the evangelical church, she says. "It speaks indirectly to issues of church growth by pointing out common errors made by church leaders as they develop programs to engage people with quick fixes, friendship, and happiness rather than truth, fellowship, and joy."
Camp says her readers "know there is more to being a Christian than what is being taught in most churches. They are people hungry for all God has for them, but lack knowledge about what it is, how to get it, and why it isn't being promoted in their own congregation. They need to be refocused on Jesus Christ as head of the church and therefore of their own congregations."
Camp was a student and leader with Bible Study Fellowship International for over 20 years.
"My greatest hope for 'Stench!' is that God will use it to bring revival throughout Christendom," she says. "This will happen if the reader takes away from the book the fact that Jesus Christ is the head of the church, builds it his way, and judges those who use worldly methods and philosophies instead of following his Word."
Camp grew up in Missouri. She currently lives in Morris, IL, with her husband of forty years, John. They have three grown children and four grandchildren.
