The National Day of Prayer has been a vital part of American heritage since the first call to prayer in 1775 by the Continental Congress when it asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. President Lincoln later proclaimed a day of "humiliation, fasting, and prayer" in 1863. In 1952, a joint resolution passed by Congress and was signed by President Harry S. Truman, declaring an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, President Reagan permanently set the day as the first Thursday in May of each year.
Each year the president and the governor of each state signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.
The 58th annual National Day of Prayer will take place May 7, 2009 themed "Prayer! America's Hope." On May 7th millions of Americans will come together in the public and private places to pause and pray for our nation and our leaders for the seven centers of power: government, church education, media, family, business, and military.
