LOS ANGELES, April 7, 2015 /Christian Newswire/ -- 'David and Goliath' was the #1 independent movie (in per screen average for a specialty bow) at the box office this weekend and the #2 new-release film in the 25 cities behind "Fast and the Furious 7."

"We're just extremely happy that God was honored at the theaters," says a spokesperson for RiverRain Studios. "We're not trying to compete with Hollywood or other Christian filmmakers."

The film appealed from day one to the faith-based crowd that were turned off to 'Noah' and 'Exodus.'

"We risked our lives shooting the film in North Africa," says the director Tim Chey, "to bring a cup of cold water to every Believer around the world. It's about seeking the Lord with all your heart and you find him – Jeremiah 29:13 – that's what David did."

The film stars unknown actor Miles Sloman who beat out several thousand actors to get the part of David. And Jerry Sokolosky who is the tallest man in Canada at 7'8.

Theater-goers came out elated. "First movie that is right on with the Bible," said John Locantore. "Very powerful."

Another theater-goer, Christine Tabernilla said, "Faith started to grow like a tiny seed in my heart after I watched this movie... I'm excited to start reading the Book of Psalm now, thank you DAVID you made me believed that Faith can move a mountain."

Dwayne Harlan said, "This movie will lift up the faith of every Believer."

'David and Goliath' looks at one of the most powerful and beloved Bible stories of all time. The film will focus on the early life of David who fought against the Philistine giant, Goliath against all odds.

"It's a beautiful and majestic film that quotes Scripture and is directed by a sold-out Believer," says Darren Jones, a pastor. "Of course it will be attacked by atheists, movie critic geniuses, you name it. It will even be attacked by carnal Christians in sheep's clothing. But God has anointed the film most definitely."

'David and Goliath' is now playing in theaters in 25 cities.
