Answering the Atheists

GLENDALE, Arizona, November 1 /Christian Newswire/ -- Atheism is publishing's new big thing. Amazingly, the loudly touted books offer nothing original. And the only proof offered by the authors is their rigid insistence on their suppositions. Yet if caught in a catastrophe, they would, to a man, pray for Christian help because that's the best kind.

Psalm 14 sums it up: "The fool has said in his heart there is no God." Here, "fool" isn't so much a lack of IQ as a deficiency in wisdom. Proverbs 9:10 adds "The fear [i.e. awe] of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Since the authors seem to hold only themselves in awe, we can understand why they created books devoid of wisdom and ripe for correction.

Sadly, many Christians lack the knowledge to refute atheistic illogic, even when it's a lay-up. The church has emphasized emotion over intellect for too long. Many of today's Christians can't explain what they believe.

Christian scholars are leaping into this significant breach, publishing hefty tomes of apologetics. Though talented, they miss a critical point: They're writing to a painfully unprepared audience. For example, ask average church attendees what "apologetics" means.

Fortunately, Bette Dowdell wrote a book for real people. "How to be a Christian Without Being Annoying" meets readers where they are and encourages them along. With clear and concise writing, and a touch of humor, she explains the Bible's description of Christianity. The book is, in fact, an apologia, though jargon-phobic Dowdell would never call it that.

And starting today, publisher Confident Faith Institute has a special offer. Buyers of "How to be a Christian Without Being Annoying" will receive a gift: A new, 48-page e-book, The Christmas Invitation. Combining her usual scholarship and breezy writing style, Dowdell brings the Christmas story to life with details you've never heard before. Order at www.ConfidentFaith.com or 800-235-4235 (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST). The 192-page, hard-cover book retails for $24.95.

Hugh Hewitt, talk show host, author, attorney and blog royalty, says, "Bette Dowdell's passion for the unchurched is extraordinary, as is her advice to new or about-to-be believers. Give her book to a friend who is looking for the answers."
