Activists break down barricades at Lincoln Memorial and encourage others to climb stairs

WASHINGTON, Oct. 4, 2013 /Christian Newswire/ -- Thursday, October 3rd marked the third day of the government shut down which has resulted in national monuments being barricade and closed to the public. At approximately 2:00 pm EST tourist visiting the Lincoln Memorial decided they have had enough and broke down the barricades to climb the stairs to the top while encouraging others to follow.

When a security officer was asked why the monument was shut down she responded, "Federal government is shut down, the memorials are shut down."

Judd Saul, an outspoken political activist from Iowa was visiting the monument when he heard the security officer's response. "We own this property, this is state property, our tax dollars pay for this property, we have every right to go up there, and that's what we are going to do," Saul shouted to a crowed of other tourist, "I am done with barricades, whoever wants to come up the stairs with me, we're going up. I came here to see Lincoln!"

When another officer was asked if there was a threat or any law being broken she was unable to respond. Saul's friend who was also at the memorial, Craig Bergman, said, "That a free people would stand behind a barricade, the spot where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his 'I Have a Dream Speech,' shows that the mighty has fallen."
