Rally for Religious Liberty in Lansing

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 10, 2019 /Christian Newswire/ -- Since 1976, the State of Michigan has enjoyed the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act prohibiting discrimination with regard to employment, housing, education, and access to public accommodations specifically on the basis of "religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status." But in May of 2018, the five-member body of appointees charged with enforcing the law, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, issued an interpretive statement in which it defined the word "sex" to include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity." This is an overreach on the grandest scale as it expands the law apart from the work of the state legislature—the governing body charged with such a task. It is no surprise, then, that religious liberties are now being infringed upon as religious organizations are landing in the MCRC's prosecutorial reticule. In response to the MCRC's overreach, a religious liberty rally intent on speaking against such abuses has been planned for October 2, 2019 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm on the capitol steps in Lansing, Michigan.
